Chapped lips are not fun. Oftentimes they cause a lot of pain and anxiety for those who have it. That might be tolerable if it only lasted a day or two. Unfortunately, we know that chapped lips can often last for months at a time, sometimes years. So how come we have chronic chapped lips?

It seems that part of the issue is that it's rather easy to get chapped lips to begin with. The lips don't have any way of producing any protective emollients like the rest of our skin does. It's easy for dry or cold weather, dehydration, licking the lips, chap sticks, etc. to dry out the lips then. This also makes it difficult to recover once the lips are chapped, because the lips don't have any natural way of restoring moisture to them.

This is usually the part where we turn to chap sticks to help us. It makes sense, because the lips are chapped and we have no way of naturally making it any better. The only problem is that chap sticks often contain ingredients that are meant to damage the lips, rather than heal them, while producing a little bit of soothing comfort. This makes it so you use more of the chap sticks and have to constantly buy more. Unfortunately, this only perpetuates the problem.

At this point, the lips are usually just getting worse, while we frantically pursue more chap sticks, start licking our lips for comfort, etc. just to try and make it feel better. Chapped lips only get worse because more times than not we don't know how to really heal them. We focus on only one aspect (usually the external part) of the problem.

Not only is it terribly easy to get dried out lips to begin with, most people don't know how to properly deal with it in a healthy manner. Instead, because most people don't know any better, they will turn to solutions that end up doing much more harm than good. Licking and biting at the lips, chap sticks with known skin irritants, etc. Almost all of these solutions focus primarily on the external problem, instead of seeing it as an internal issue that needs to be rectified.

To get rid of chapped lips, you have to attack the internal problem as well as the external part. As simple as this is, it is not common knowledge, nor is it commonly practiced. It requires taking care of your body on the inside. Only then can you beat chapped lips from the inside-out and experience lasting freedom from it.
