We will look at a soap on the commercial market that claims to be a beauty bar, break it down, see what it contains and if it is good for skin care or not.

Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate: This is a chemically synthesized detergent that is used in soap as a detergent, emulsifier and wetting agent. Some MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) list this ingredient as a medium to mild skin irritant. While it may clean you, including the oils you need on and in your skin, it can cause skin irritation and may dry the skin. So this does not appear to be very good for skin care.

Stearic Acid: This is produced by treating animal fat with water under high pressure and temperature and is used as a hardener in soap. It is deemed safe by MSDS and the FDA, however some studies have shown it to cause problems in people with allergies. This ingredient does not appear to help or harm with skin care but it can intensify allergic conditions.

Sodium Tallowate: This is produced when a solution of lye and water are mixed with animal fat. Normally cattle fat is used, however other animal fats may be used. This process is called saponification and creates what we normally consider soap. It is cheap, readily available and deemed safe by all government agencies. There are some recent studies that have suggested all the antibiotics, growth hormones and other things feed to cattle are deposited into the animal's fat, possibly causing allergic reactions and other problems. Sodium Tallowate does contain large amounts of glycerol (glycerin) but in commercially prepared soap products this is normally removed before it is used in the soap and sold as additives for skin care products. This additive could be beneficial or harmful to your skin care and your body according to what raw materials were used and if the glycerol is removed or not.

Sodium Palmitate: This is produced the same manner as sodium tallowate with the saponification process of adding lye and water to coconut palm oil. It is deemed safe to use. Palm oil is a great soapmaking oil but must be used in the proper proportions or it will dry the skin.

Sodium Isethionate: It is an amphoteric detergent used in detergent bar soaps. It makes a dense lather in addition to the lather made by the soap. It is mild on the skin, and non-drying. It works equally well in soft or hard water. There is no known health risk and it is deemed safe for use. It appears to be good for skin care.

Water: Water is used in combination with lye to combine with the plant or animal fats to cause the saponification process.

Lauric Acid, Sodium Cocoate and Sodium Palm Kernelate: These are naturally occurring acids found in coconut oil and palm kernel oil and are produced by the saponification process. All three produce a hard soap with lots of fluffy lather that cleans well but can be drying to the skin. It is good for cleaning the skin but not great for skin care and should be used in very small amounts.

Sodium Stearate: This is normally produced in a laboratory and according to numerous MSDS "Skin contact may cause irritation with symptoms of redness, swelling, itching and pain." also the MSDS states "This product is hazardous under the criteria of the Federal OSHA Hazard Communication Standard 29 CFR 1910.1200.". Good for skin care. I do not think so.

Cocamidopropyl Betaine: This is a laboratory made synthetic compound that some studies have found to be an allergen in fact; Cocamidopropyl Betaine was voted 2004 allergen of the year by the American Contact Dermatitis Society. It is used as an emulsifying agent to physically interact with both oil and water stabilizing them. Is it good for skin care? Does not look like it but we do know that it is an allergen for some people.

Sodium Chloride: This is plain ordinary table salt and it is used as a thickening agent. Think about wetting your skin and rubbing table salt into it. If that would not dry it out I do not know what would. So is it good for skin care? No.

Tetrasodium EDTA, Tetrasodium Etidronate: Both of these are basically the same. Another laboratory made synthetic compound that is used as a chelating agent and preservative. It holds and binds metals to it so it helps in removing soap scum. There are some clams that it very easily penetrates the skin and carries these metals into your body or when entering the body is soaks up the metals your body needs to complete the bodies processes. It is deemed to be safe by all government agencies but there are a lot of independent tests that do not think so. So is it good for skin care, no it does nothing to help the skin.

Maltol: This is a naturally occurring organic compound that is used primarily as a flavor enhancer. It is found in the bark of larch tree, in pine needles, and in roasted malt where it gets its name. It seems they use this as an odor masking ingredient. The MSDS has this to say "Chronic Effects on Humans: May cause damage to the following organs: blood, kidneys, bladder, gastrointestinal tract. Other Toxic Effects on Humans: Hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant). Routes of Entry: Absorbed through skin, Eye contact, Inhalation." It does not sound as if it is good for skin care or the general heath of your body.

Titanium Dioxide: This is a natural occurring oxide however there is a lot of chemicals that must be mixed with it to make the pure form that is used. It is used in soap making to give the pure white color to the soap. Titanium dioxide has recently been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as an IARC Group 2B carcinogen ''possibly carcinogen to humans''. So is it good for skin care? Not at all.

Our skin is the largest of all human organs and we know that what we apply to it will wind up in our body. So can we trust these ingredients to keep us healthy or should we expect that they may contribute to some health problems? I will let you be the judge of that; but a lot of them are not good for skin care.

Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer. In some parts of the U.S., more than half the Caucasian population has had basal cell carcinoma, the least serious form of skin cancer, by age 75. Fortunately, skin cancer is preventable and, in many cases, easily cured.

Soaking up some rays may seem like a pleasant--and relatively harmless--way to spend a summer afternoon. But the latest statistics from the Skin Cancer Foundation proves otherwise: One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of their lifetime and the American Cancer Society estimates more than 9,000 people will die this year from the disease.

Skin cancer is caused by burning due to over-exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. Two types of UV rays reach the Earth--UVB rays are the most harmful and are known to cause skin cancer; UVA rays may also contribute.

You see, skin color depends on the amount of melanin pigment in one's skin. All skin contains melanin, dark skin just has more, providing extra, natural protection against the sun.

When skin is exposed to the sun, it produces extra melanin to block out the rays, making you turn a shade of brown. But the skin is only bronzing as a defense mechanism, to protect the body from burning. Even the lightest tan is a sign that the body's defense mechanism against the sun's rays has been at work.

If you try to tan too fast or have fair skin, your body can't produce enough melanin and you burn. And the more you burn, the greater the risk of developing skin cancer. The damage done is cumulative. This means that regular sunburns during childhood can contribute to skin cancer later in life.

Although there is no such thing as safe sunbathing, there's no need to forgo a glow altogether. The catch is you've got to use a self-tanning or sunless product to achieve the look.

Whereas a real tan is the result of ultraviolet-radiation injury to the pigment cells of the skin, a fake tan doesn't involve pigment cells at all. In fact, the active ingredient in most self-tanners--dihydroxyacetone (DHA)--affects only the dead cells in the epidermis which are about to be shed. DHA binds with naturally occurring amino acids in this layer, creating a brown by-product that looks like a tan.

While a self-tanner provides a safe tan (DHA is a Food and Drug Administration-approved colorless dye), it is a mistake to assume that it provides the same protection as a sunscreen. The truth is that underneath it, you're pale and prone to burning. Look for self-tanners with a SPF of 15 or greater. If your sunless tanning product doesn't contain sunscreen, apply one on top. So when the sun shines, regulate your exposure and use a good sunscreen.

But did you know that if you wear sunscreen, which you definitely should, you may need a little help in the vitamin D department. That's because your sunscreen is doing its job of blocking the sun's rays--the very ones your body uses to produce vitamin D. Fear not, though, if you're between the ages of 25 and 60, you need only about 200 International Units of vitamin D daily to help your body absorb calcium and phosphorus into your bones and teeth. What's more, yu can get that much, and more, nutritionally from food sources such as fortified milk, salmon, and fortified cereal, to name a few.

When winter strikes or anytime for that matter, it's time to give our skin extra care to keep it from drying up like a bad prune. I always have so many problems, largely with my hands; My skin gets very sensitive to everything especially when the season changes, so here are a few helpful tips to consider.

HANDS:

1. Use gloves when washing dishes and using chemical cleaners. Even if you're just loading the dishwasher, the less your hands are exposed to a lot of water, the better. Try applying some Lotion right before the gloves go on for some added help. The heat from the water will open up pores allowing the moisture to soak in better.

2. Stay away from Anti-bacterial soap! This is murder to your skin no matter the season, but especially in winter. It strips everything from you skin, good and bad.

3. Moisturize often. The best for your skin would be homemade lotion without any preservatives, fragrances, colorings and chemical ingredients. Choose a lotion that has few ingredients with ones that you can pronounce and recognize-if at all possible.

4. Cover up skin when going outside!

BODY:

1. Exfoliate once a week with a natural homemade recipe.

2. Moisturize after every shower. Again, use a homemade lotion if possible. It's easy to make and really does a good job. Just make sure to really massage it in.

3. When showering, if your skin is in really bad shape use water that is mildly warm. Resist taking a hot shower! Hot water robs your skin of its natural oil, and during the winter especially you want to work hard at keeping oil production stable. This doesn't mean staying away from showering though! =) Just keep the extremes to a minimum.

4. Cover up skin when going outside! Harsh winds, sun and dry air can rob your skin of oils.

FACE:

1. Use a natural face wash, like powdered milk or yogurt. Try to keep face washing to a minimum. Once a day is plenty.

2. Wash with very mild temperature water. This is important for anytime of the year, but especially during really dry seasons.

3. Moisturize once a day. I like using Extra Virgin Olive Oil, believe it or not. It works really nicely and is very nourishing. Also try using 100% Cocoa Butter. This is a wonderful facial moisturizer and completely natural!

4. Use a mask no more than twice a week. There are some great ones for moisturizing.

LIPS:

1. Don't lick them!

2. Hydrate often with a natural product. Chapstick tends to make things worse and make your lips more dependent on needing coverage.

3. I love using Cocoa Butter, again 100%, in the morning after washing my face and at night right before I go to bed. Leaves my lips very silky smooth and soft.

4. I've also used honey dabbed straight onto my lips. Honey has antibacterial properties to help kill germs and also it smooths and softens. Let it really sink into your lips.

FEET:

1. If your feet get dry and need a boost, apply Extra Virgin Olive Oil generously then cover with socks. You can do this anytime and I've found it very successful.

2. Use a foot soak like one found on my website and treat your feet if they're really bad, applying lotion or oil and socks afterward.

HAIR:

1. Try a natural recipe for a hair mask. I have one on my site now and am hunting and trying to find more that work well.

2. A warm oil treatment can be great for dry hair. Take a little olive oil, heat it up (not too hot, you don't want to burn your scalp!), then use your fingers and a comb to work it through your hair. Use a shower cap (you can get 3 at Wal Mart for a couple bucks) and let the oil sit for 30 minutes to a couple hours, you choose. Shampoo and condition as usual.

When winter strikes or anytime for that matter, it's time to give our skin extra care to keep it from drying up like a bad prune. I always have so many problems, largely with my hands; My skin gets very sensitive to everything especially when the season changes, so here are a few helpful tips to consider.

HANDS:

1. Use gloves when washing dishes and using chemical cleaners. Even if you're just loading the dishwasher, the less your hands are exposed to a lot of water, the better. Try applying some Lotion right before the gloves go on for some added help. The heat from the water will open up pores allowing the moisture to soak in better.

2. Stay away from Anti-bacterial soap! This is murder to your skin no matter the season, but especially in winter. It strips everything from you skin, good and bad.

3. Moisturize often. The best for your skin would be homemade lotion without any preservatives, fragrances, colorings and chemical ingredients. Choose a lotion that has few ingredients with ones that you can pronounce and recognize-if at all possible.

4. Cover up skin when going outside!

BODY:

1. Exfoliate once a week with a natural homemade recipe.

2. Moisturize after every shower. Again, use a homemade lotion if possible. It's easy to make and really does a good job. Just make sure to really massage it in.

3. When showering, if your skin is in really bad shape use water that is mildly warm. Resist taking a hot shower! Hot water robs your skin of its natural oil, and during the winter especially you want to work hard at keeping oil production stable. This doesn't mean staying away from showering though! =) Just keep the extremes to a minimum.

4. Cover up skin when going outside! Harsh winds, sun and dry air can rob your skin of oils.

FACE:

1. Use a natural face wash, like powdered milk or yogurt. Try to keep face washing to a minimum. Once a day is plenty.

2. Wash with very mild temperature water. This is important for anytime of the year, but especially during really dry seasons.

3. Moisturize once a day. I like using Extra Virgin Olive Oil, believe it or not. It works really nicely and is very nourishing. Also try using 100% Cocoa Butter. This is a wonderful facial moisturizer and completely natural!

4. Use a mask no more than twice a week. There are some great ones for moisturizing.

LIPS:

1. Don't lick them!

2. Hydrate often with a natural product. Chapstick tends to make things worse and make your lips more dependent on needing coverage.

3. I love using Cocoa Butter, again 100%, in the morning after washing my face and at night right before I go to bed. Leaves my lips very silky smooth and soft.

4. I've also used honey dabbed straight onto my lips. Honey has antibacterial properties to help kill germs and also it smooths and softens. Let it really sink into your lips.

FEET:

1. If your feet get dry and need a boost, apply Extra Virgin Olive Oil generously then cover with socks. You can do this anytime and I've found it very successful.

2. Use a foot soak like one found on my website and treat your feet if they're really bad, applying lotion or oil and socks afterward.

HAIR:

1. Try a natural recipe for a hair mask. I have one on my site now and am hunting and trying to find more that work well.

2. A warm oil treatment can be great for dry hair. Take a little olive oil, heat it up (not too hot, you don't want to burn your scalp!), then use your fingers and a comb to work it through your hair. Use a shower cap (you can get 3 at Wal Mart for a couple bucks) and let the oil sit for 30 minutes to a couple hours, you choose. Shampoo and condition as usual.
